When an eruption occurs, flowing lava will incinerate flowers, trees or any other plant life in its path and toxic volcanic gases will also destroy vegetation. However, once volcanic activity subsides, plants always return and before long the earth is again producing vegetation. Along Onsen Hotel trail extending to the Oshima Onsen Hotel, you can take in the changing landscape as lava turns to forest ground.

Starting from a single seed, a budding plant sprouts up from a crack in the lava. This in turn creates soil which then becomes meadowland. Trees born of the meadowland grow, eventually creating forests. Please enjoy a walk along this trail and experience for yourself a story of plant regeneration spanning hundreds of years.
