Mt. Shiinoki is an extremely well-developed natural forest dominated by large Sudajii (Castanopsis sieboldii) trees up to 25m tall, and is designated as a national natural monument as the "Castanopsis forest in Mt. Shiinoki".
In the transition series of Izu Oshima, Sudajii (Castanopsis sieboldii) forest along with Tabunoki (Machilus thunbergii) forest is the Climax Forest (a stable forest where the plant community eventually reaches after going through changes). The development of Climax Forest indicates that the area has not been affected by volcanic eruptions for a long time.
