"Akahage" is the Scoria Cone, which was formed by an eruption about 3,400 years ago, when magma erupted with great force and rapidly accumulated around the crater. The erupted scoria was exposed to the air while it was still hot enough to oxidise and turn a rusty red colour. You can observe the bright red scoriae in the interior of this cone up close on the Sunset Palm Line trail.

In the past, scoria was mined and shipped as a building material. Because of this, the original shape of the scoria cone is no longer known.
