Huge and valuable cross-section of the volcanic history

Over the past 18,000 years, more than 100 large eruptions have created a huge and beautiful layered structure. This formation was unexpectedly discovered in 1953, when the mountain was being cut down to build a road around the island.

About 1,700 years ago, a major eruption occurred at the top of the mountain, forming a caldera. The volcanic blocks blown away and pyroclastic flows deposits during the eruption are preserved in the upper west end of the stratum. The large wavy formations are not evidence of folds, but the ejecta piled up on the original undulating terrain.

Do not go inside the guardrails as there is a risk of cliff collapse.

The black layer is the scoria layer from eruptions that occurred on land.
